UKVI Account and eVisa: Proving Your ILR Status
In a UKVI account that costs nothing to use, your indefinite leave to remain appears as an eVisa.
All Biometric residence permit cards have expired, and eVisas have taken their place.
How to Create a UKVI Account
A UKVI account is required to view your eVisa, and there is no charge for creating or accessing it. You will need access to a phone number and an email address each time you sign in.
Do not start a second account when you already have one. A new eVisa normally appears right away, though linking may need as long as 24 hours.
Biometric Residence Permit: What Happened to BRPs
People who received permission by 31 October 2024 were given BRP cards; every one of those cards is now out of date. Signing in with an expired card may still be possible for a period ending no later than 31 December 2026.
If your BRP is lost or stolen you must report it; failing to do so can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. When you dispose of an expired card, cut it into pieces.
If a Stamp or Sticker Is Your Only Proof of ILR
When a passport stamp is your only proof of settlement, you submit a free no time limit application for an eVisa. The process may take up to 6 months, so begin well ahead if you must confirm your status for a job or a trip.
Getting a Share Code to Prove Your Status
Your UKVI account generates a share code, and an employer or landlord uses it to check your status online. That code works for 90 days, and anyone verifying it will also need your date of birth.
Updating Your UKVI Account After ILR
When your name, phone number, email or address changes, or you get a new passport, update the account. While a decision is pending, you are not able to alter your name or passport.
During travel, bring the passport linked to your account, or the border check might fail to locate your eVisa.
UK Visa Application Centre or UKVCAS?
Applicants who are outside the UK use visa application centres. When you apply for ILR from inside the UK, you instead provide fingerprints and a photo at a UKVCAS appointment.
